HISTORY
The clans of Scotland are the families and associated septs (other families affliated with the Chief clan). In Medieval times the clan system was tribal particularly as the Highlands of Scotland were so remote and difficult to access. As this system became organised identity was essential in the form of wearing a particular Tartan and wearing a Clan badge.
A Clan Crest is always displayed within a strap and buckle. This represents the tradition of a Clan Chief giving a follower a metal plate with the Clan's Crest engraved on it to be worn as a badge of allegiance. It was fastened to the clothing with a strap and buckle.
