HISTORY of IONA
IONA is a small island off the West coast of Scotland. In 563AD St.Columba, an Irish missionary monk, built a Celtic church there. It became a seat of learning and pilgrimage and the great masterpiece of Western calligraphy ‘The Book of Kells’ was created there by the monks in about 800AD. At the time of the Viking invasions it was removed to Ireland for safe keeping and now resides in Trinity College, Dublin.
Also, St.Aiden served as a monk at Iona, before helping to establish Christianity in Northumberland, on the island of Lindesfarne.
