HISTORY

MAGNA CARTA

The Magna Carta, ‘The Great Charter’, is one of the most famous documents in the world. Originally sealed by King John (r. 1199–1216) in 1215 at Runnymead near Windsor.  The Barons at the time were rebelling against King John and this document was a solution to the political crisis. Magna Carta established for the first time the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject to the law. Many of the clauses were rewritten over subsequent years but the 39th clause giving 'free men' the right to justice and a fair trial has become a cornerstone of many democracies.

Some of Magna Carta’s core principles are echoed in the United States Bill of Rights (1791) and in many other constitutional documents around the world, as well as in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and the European Convention on Human Rights (1950).
There are four existing copies of the Magna Carta at Lincoln Castle, Salisbury Cathedral, Hereford Cathedral and the British Library in London.
