HISTORY
MAGNA CARTA
The Magna Carta, ‘The Great Charter’, is one of the most famous documents in the world. Originally sealed by King John (r. 1199–1216) in 1215 at Runnymead near Windsor. The Barons at the time were rebelling against King John and this document was a solution to the political crisis. Magna Carta established for the first time the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject to the law. Many of the clauses were rewritten over subsequent years but the 39th clause giving 'free men' the right to justice and a fair trial has become a cornerstone of many democracies.
