HISTORY
ISLE OF LEWIS CHESS PIECES
The amazing discovery of 93 artifacts in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis, the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, of which 78 are Chess Pieces were found to be of Norse origin dating to the 12th century. They are carved from Walrus tusks and teeth and decorated with ornate Celtic and Viking designs. The hoard consists of 8 kings, 8 queens, 16 bishops, 15 knights, 12 warders including the fearsome Berserkers biting their shields, 19 pawns.
The majority of the pieces are on display in the British Museum and a few in the National Museum of Scotland.
