HISTORY
A Clan Crest is not the same as a Coat of Arms. A Clan Chief will have a Coat of Arms and the Crest section of his Coat of Arms (above the helmet) will normally be the Clan Crest which anyone within the clan can wear and use. A clan will consist of family members and persons affliated to the clan so there can be many different families (septs) within a clan.
Clan crests are always depicted within a belt and buckle circle design. This refers to the tradition of a Clan Chief giving a metal engraved crest as a badge of allegiance and it was fastened to clothing with a strap and buckle.
