WELLS CATHEDRAL
Wells Cathedral, dedicated to St.Andrew the Apostle, is the seat of the Bishop of Bath and Wells in Somerset, England. Built in 1176–1450 to replace an earlier church on the site since 705, it is moderately sized for an English cathedral and has been called "unquestionably one of the most beautiful"[ and "most poetic" of English cathedrals. It survived much of the destruction of monastries and churches during the Dissolution of Monastries in Henry VIII's time and the Civil War in the 1600's. The sculptures on the west front of the cathedral are some of the finest medieval carving in England. Much of the front had been painted in bright colours and must have been a stunning sight to see. The Medieval Glass Windows are some of the most important in England despite some destruction by Parliamentary troops in the Civil War.
THE SWANS OF WELLS CATHEDRAL
Sometime in the 1800's a pair of swans were fed at the moat gatehouse and this has become quite a tradition as the swans learned to ring the gatehouse bell at feeding time. Swans are a familiar sight on the moat and continue to learn this trick for food.
