HISTORY
PICTISH
The tribes of Scotland were described as Picts by the Romans in the 3rd Century when trying to occupy Scottish lands. It probably was meant as an insult but the name continues to-day.
The Picts carved into their standing stones mythical creatures such as mermaids and monsters. Unique to the Picts are the 'V' rod and 'Z' rod shapes. The 'V' rod is a bent arrow superimposed onto a crescent shape. The 'Z' rod is found combined with a serpent or a double spiral. Possibly symbols of the afterlife but it's speculation. These stones were probably carved between the 5th and 10th centuries.
