THE CELTIC KNOT
The Celtic Knot design is found throughout the British Isles and the most prevalent surviving examples are on Christian artifacts from the 7th and 8th Century in the form of huge standing stone crosses, metalwork and beautifully illuminated bibles such as the Book of Kells, which is on display at Trinity College, Dublin.
It is uncertain when and where these designs originated but many artifacts have been found with this scroll and knotwork throughout Europe going back to pre-Christian times. In modern times we try to put a meaning to this artwork but as little is written down it is all speculation but undoubtedly it indicates a person’s status, or to glorify the gospels.
