Product Description

HISTORY

A typical Scottish Claymore sword and Targe (shield) brooch.

The name Claymore comes from the Gaelic 'claidheamh-mor' meaning great sword. It can refer to the Scottish equivalent of the late Medieval two- handed sword or the basket-hilted sword. These broad bladed swords where used by Scottish regiments and even to-day are used by Scottish officers in ceremonial events.

The Targe or shield was the primary means of defence for Scottish Highlanders. After their defeat at the battle of Culloden 1746 carrying a targe was banned by the English as was the wearing of the tartan.
