Product Description

HISTORY

This brooch is based on one of the pennanular brooches found on St.Ninian's Isle, Shetland in 1958. The hoard consisted of 28 silver and silver gilt objects, all decorated, made during the second half of the eighth century. They are thought to be Pictish, the tribe coming from the East and North of Scotland. It's possible the treasure was buried when Viking raids began in Scotland at the end of the 8th Century or beginning of the 9th Century.

These brooches had an important function as status symbols that demonstrated the wealth and rank of the wearer and were regarded as highly valued items.
