LEGEND
The Scottish wild cat is one of the most endangered species in the UK.
In Scottish mythology the Cat Sith, fairy or witch, haunts the Highlands. It is large cat, black possibly with a white spot. It was thought that when a person died the Sith could steal it's soul before it could enter God's kingdom. Hence a corpse would be closely guarded before being buried. Another practice was that the Cat Sith would bless a house at Samhain (Halloween) if a saucer of milk was left on the doorstep. Of course those that didn't would be cursed.
The saying a cat has nine lives possibly comes from the belief that the Cat Sith was a witch able to transform itself into a cat and back, but on the ninth time they would remain a cat for the rest of their life.
