Product Description
HISTORY
THE CELTIC KNOT design in many variations is found throughout the British Isles and the most prevalent surviving examples are on Christian artifacts from the 7th Century in the form of huge standing stone crosses, metalwork and beautifully illuminated bibles such as the Book of Kells, which is on display at Trinity College, Dublin.
It is uncertain when these designs originated and where but certainly many artifacts have been found with this scroll and knotwork throughout Europe and Asia going back to pre-Christian times. In modern times we try to put a meaning to this artwork but as little is written down it is all speculation but undoubtedly it indicates a person's status, or to glorify the gospels.
MERINO WOOL
Unlike British breeds of sheep which produce a harsher wool the Merino sheep is renowned for it's beautifully soft wool. It originated in Southwest Spain going back to the 12th Century AD and is mainly found in warmer climates such as Spain, USA, Australia and New Zealand. It is purely bred for it's wool and must be sheared once a year. The British climate has not been conducive to raising Merinos but there are some flocks now in the UK.
