QUAICH
A Gaelic word meaning ‘shallow cup’. This style of drinking vessel with two handles called ‘lugs’ originated in the Highlands of Scotland centuries ago. Originally fashioned from wood, staghorn or leather, from the 17th Century quaiches were made from pewter or silver. Traditionally, a Quaich is offered to a guest as a form of welcome or a parting drink, generally whisky.
A LUCKENBOOTH was a locked booth situated on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh where jewellery workers made and sold their creations, dating back to the 16th century. The brooch design of two entwined hearts often surmounted by a crown (possibly commemorating Mary Queen of Scots) was a traditional gift a man gave to his betrothed as a symbol of his love and a lucky charm to ward off evil spirits. It is said that it was an amulet to ease the pain of childbirth and when pinned to a baby’s shawl would protect against being stolen by fairies.
