HISTORY
The traditional Aran Knitting originated on the Aran Isles which are situated in the mouth of Galway Bay on the West coast of Ireland. The garments were mainly worn by fishermen.
Originally the wool was undyed and untreated so as to retain the natural lanolin oils of the wool. Thus knitted it would provide the properties to keep out the cold and rain just as it would for the sheep living on the wild Atlantic coast.
The Myth: It is said that the different cable designs would indicate the place or family where the garments were knitted. These unique designs would then help identify a drowned fisherman. There has been no official documentation of this.
