LEGEND

King Arthur & Excalibur
The legend of King Arthur in British literature was first mentioned by Geoffrey of Monmouth in 'Historia regum Britanniae' in the 12th century, and then more famously 'Le Morte d'Arthur' by Sir Thomas Malory in the 15th Century.
The Sword in the Stone:  Arthur as a boy was the only person able to draw the sword 'Excalibur' from a rock where it had been magically fixed.
Lady of the Lake:  In this version of the sword legend Arthur accepted Excalibur from the lady in the lake provided it was returned to the lake on his death. At the battle of Camlann (537AD) Arthur was mortally wounded and entrusted Sir Bedivere to return Excalibur to the lake.
Excalibur (Caliburnus or Caliburn) is generally depicted as a Medieval long sword but if there was a king or ruler in the 6th Century called Arthur his  sword would more than likely have been a short sword of the Roman type.
