Product Description

HISTORY

The Cathar Cross or Cross of Toulouse was the symbol of  The Cathars, a religious sect, in the Lanquedoc region of Southern France, from the 11th to 14th Centuries. This cross was the coat of arms of the family of St-Gillis, Counts of Toulouse in the Middle Ages. The 12 knobs at the ends of the cross may represent the twelve apostles.

The Cathars were at odds with the Catholic church in many instances, (eventually the Catholic church destroyed them). They believed women equal to men and it's said that Eleanor of Aquitaine sympathised with their views. She famously was the wife of Henry II of England and mother to King John and Richard I, the Lionheart.
